Why you need the Razer Core V2 for your laptop

Using a laptop without a GPU is a difficult task especially when you are into gaming or content creation like photo or video editing. A laptop that doesn’t have a GPU is only suitable for doing basic task and playing 3D games. It is not fast enough and if you start running intensive games and software’s on a laptop without GPU it will always crash.

If you care about speed then you won’t go after a laptop without a GPU. These types of laptops are only suitable for commercial and office works. Sometimes people often buy laptops with high end specs and after a number of years the parts become outdated and worn out.

That’s where the Razer Core V2 comes in and it can help boost performance of your old laptop. if your laptop has a thunderbolt 3 port then an external graphics enclosure can be used to increase the performce of your laptop. it will allow new and updated games run smoothly on your old laptop. the eGPU technology is still in its early stages and it already works fine with most laptops.

Most people like the comfort of moving their laptops around and with an eGPU you can plug in and run your task. You can unplug your laptop when you are done and move it where ever you want to. You need the Razer Core V2 because it will power your laptop if you pair it with a very strong GPU.

Selecting the Best eGPU for your laptop

The Razer Core V2 has an excellent build quality the case is made of aluminum with a matte and anodized finish. It comes wrapped in a rectangular shape and once you set your eyes on the enclosure you will know that it is thick and hefty.

There is a cutout on the left-hand side with a mesh grille that allow the GPU fans to get cool air. We have the Razer logo on the right side and at the top we have another cut out for air. At the bottom we have a honeycomb vent cut out from thin metal.

The front is made of metal and we have the RGB lightning at the bottom of the front we also have two rubber feet’s that helps stabilize the Core V2 when placed on a flat surface. We have type C port that supports thunderbolt 3, four USB 3.0 ports, one gigabit ethernet port, and an AC power input.

More ports will depend on the graphics card of your choice.

Opening the interior of the GPU is easy and we have a quick release system like we have with the Core X and Core X Chroma. at the back we have a folding handle that acts as a lock, pulling it out releases the handle and you can easily pull out the GPU dock out.

The handle is made of metal and it is as hefty as the rest of the Core V2. Pulling it out for the first time you will see a very thick GPU sized foam with installation instructions. We have a small motherboard beneath the GPU that has the PCle x16 slot. The enclosure supports 500W of power supply.

The power is enough for some of the Industry leading GPUs. your laptop needs all the latest thunderbolt 3 drivers for the enclosure to work efficiently minus Razer laptops. the Razer Core V2 is mostly compatible with windows 10.

This thing will power up any laptop that has a thunderbolt 3 port. it will successfully upgrade your laptop performance and you can tweak the RGB light with Chroma using the Razer software.

Here are 6 key points for selecting the Razer Core X Chroma for your laptop

Plug and Play

The Razer Core V2 supports plug and play meaning you can simply connect the enclosure to your laptop and start using it straight away. With other laptops you might have to reboot or restart your laptop.

Future proof

The Razer Core V2 allows you to swap out various GPUs. you can upgrade the graphics card inside the enclosure at intervals making it one for the future. To swap just make sure the dimensions of the GPU you are switching to is sized perfectly.

Compatible with other laptops

The eGPU works perfectly with Razer laptops but if you are using any other laptop then you need a thunderbolt 3 port on the laptop. make sure you update all the drivers on your laptop so the Core V2 will run effectively.

Compact build

The Core V2 is made of complete metal and this makes the external enclosure firm and sturdy. We have a lovely design and extra vents that makes cooling effective. There is an ethernet port as well as 4 USB 3.0 ports at the back of the enclosure.

Lightning effect with Razer Chroma

There is an RGB light on the enclosure but its not as loud as what we have on the Razer Core X Chroma. it can be customized with the Razer Chroma and it displays a lot of colors. The RGB lights help set the required tempo and mood for gaming or work.

Consistent performance

The enclosure is going to give you consistent performance whether it’s a work station or for gaming. Your laptop is going to benefit from the power of the GPU you add inside the razer core V2. The performance heavily depends on the GPU you choose to use.

A closer look at the Razer Core V2

Using the Core V2 to run various games you should expect a decent performance. Depending on the GPU inside the enclosure you might be able to push your laptop to its limits. It works fine with MacBook laptops as well but the Razer software is not available on macOS yet.

Some non-gaming laptops with a thunderbolt 3 port can also take advantage of the Razer Core V2 and get better performance. Installing any GPU that will fit into the enclosure is awesome the quick release system always come in clutch. There is no need to reboot the enclosure when the GPU is inserted.

You can fit in a workstation size GPU inside the enclosure and it will be fine. It has 500W power supply and can also be used to charge your laptop while gaming. We have extra ports that we can rely on and the ethernet port makes it even better.

Razer always make stellar enclosure and I personally feel that the Core V2 sits comfortably between the Core X and Core X Chroma. its quite expensive for an old enclosure but what you are getting here is almost similar to even much more expensive external GPUs.

Pros of the Razer Core V2

Easy to use – the eGPU is easy to use because all you need to do is plug it in when you want to start playing games or working and it starts immediately. There are a number of eGPUs out there that you might need to restart your laptop before it starts working. The core V2 features a plug and play mechanism making it easy and fun to use.

Good Build Quality – the Core V2 looks hefty and thick and it is completely made out of metal. It is compact and even from the inside there is no much space. there is a lock mechanism that allows the GPU sits firmly inside the enclosure.

Customizable Lightning – the eGPU has RGB lights that can be customized in a special way. There are many lightning effects in the razer synapse software that you can take advantage of. Some gamers like the RGB because it helps set their mood.

Cons of the Razer Core V2

Expensive – the enclosure is expensive especially when you consider that it was released years ago. There are newer versions that are priced similarly and they come with upgraded ports.

Fans are loud – when in use the fan of the Razer Core V2 can get really loud. The Core X Chroma solved the problem of loud fans on a Razer eGPU.

Does it come with a GPU?

No, it doesn’t come with a graphics card you will have to buy one and install it yourself. That is why enclosures are mostly expensive because you will have to spend a lot to get the GPU to install inside the enclosure.

Does this work with MacBook’s?

I will advise that you check out the Razer Core X or Core X Chroma they are much more compatible with MacBook’s. The Core V2 works but it is not as flexible to use as it is with others. Make sure you have a compatible GPU that works on macOS before thinking of using an external enclosure to power your MacBook.

Can I use this on my Alienware laptop?

As long as it is running on windows then it will run successfully. Just make sure your laptop has a thunderbolt 3 port and you can use the core V2 to boost the performance.

Rounding up

The core V2 is an excellent external graphics enclosure that would significantly boost the performance of your laptop. it will charge whatever laptop while transferring data at a blistering speed. If you can look past the noise then this would be a great purchase.

Razer has managed to improve a lot of features with every eGPU they release the core X and Core X Chroma are evidence of this upgrades. Even by todays standard the Core V2 is still an excellent and future proof eGPU.
